Why Creating Positive Relationships?

PDF Print E-mail

The board of directors, staff, teachers, associates, and volunteers of Creating Positive Relationships are committed to reducing sexual activity among teenagers, thereby reducing the risk of teenage pregnancy, STDs, and other negative consequences.

The core message of both the middle school and high school curriculum is that postponing sexual activity until marriage is the healthiest choice to avoid negative consequences.  The program uses a whole person approach in teaching about sexuality.  Students are encouraged to consider the physical, mental, emotional and social aspects of human sexuality and the significant freedoms and benefits associated with delaying sexual activity.

Current and accurate facts regarding the risks of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy are provided to students in an age-appropriate, non-threatening environment in addition to information regarding the possible emotional, mental and social consequences of choosing to engage in sexual activity outside of marriage.  Below are only some of the potential consequences to teens if they become sexually active:

Physical Emotional Social Mental
Unwanted Pregnancy Fear Loss of respect Loss of self esteem
STDs Depression Loss of reputation Unwanted memories
Pain Regret Strained relationships Distraction
Suicide Anger Future relationships Confusion

Our curricula also provides young people with practical strategies for goal-setting, decision-making, maintaining self-control, respecting ones self and others, planning for dating, setting safe limits for physical affection, and resisting peer pressure. Our certified instructors communicate documented information through the use of videos, demonstrations, and games, actively involving students in the learning process.  Since studies show parents are the number one factor in a child’s decision on whether or not to become sexually active, we have committed ourselves to educating, empowering and involving parents in the program through informational meetings, parent workshops, educational materials, and homework assignments where the student is required to talk to his/her parents.
